This exceptional Bernard Altman cashmere coat, dating to the late 1950s-early 1960s, represents the height of mid-century American luxury tailoring. Crafted in the USA from 100% imported cashmere and finished with original labels and ILGWU union construction, it exemplifies the quality of craftsmanship, and restraint for which Altman is known. The cashmere exterior is in excellent condition. No holes, rips, tears, or balding. An increasingly rare survival for a coat of this age, with a rich beautiful drape. Designed with an elegant open from and sculptural cocoon silhouette, accented by a dramatic back yoke detail, the coat feels both historically significant and effortlessly modern when worn. The original lining shows age-appropriate wear, but the value and desirability of this piece lie in the remarkably preserved cashmere and intact original construction. A true collector-grade garment that remains fully wearable-timeless, refined, and increasingly difficult to find. A refined investment piece that moves between collectable vintage and modern sophisticated wear. I am in awe of the softness of this cashmere and how black it is. I am open to serious offers. Shoulder to hem measures 41 inches Shoulder to Shoulder measures 16 inches Shoulder to sleeve measures 22 inches Pit to pit measures 25, this measurement is taken with the garment lying flat and the coat pulled closed, I mention this since it is a swing back so it has give to it.
