This is a vintage hand-carved mother-of-pearl "Star of Bethlehem" brooch or pin. It is made from mother-of-pearl shell, which has been intricately hand-carved. This type of carving is a traditional handicraft from Bethlehem, a practice believed to have been introduced by Franciscan friars in the 15th century. Pieces from this region are often referred to as "Bethlehem pearl". The piece features an eight-pointed star in the center, surrounded by a delicate filigree or lace-like border. The star design typically represents the Star of Bethlehem that guided the Magi to the birthplace of Christ. These brooches are often vintage, with many dating back to the mid-20th century (1940s-1960s) or earlier. Part of original price tag remains on back.
