The uppers are leather. The inside of the shoes (Strap and side walls) is also leather but coated with a synthetic material. It is flaking due to the vintage age. We easily rubbed the flaking off leaving just the under soft natural leather showing. We rubbed the flaking coating off around the inside strap down to the point where the size and material are stamped. You can rub the rest of the coating off as you see fit. See pictures.
