Your Fall Capsule Isn’t a Checklist
Class, coffee runs, and weekends all agree on striped knits, crisp shirts, dark denim, leather jackets, and loafers.

Your fall capsule can start with an outfit you already wear on repeat. If you love a roomy sweater with straight-leg jeans, keep that shape and change the colors or layers. When you add a piece, look for one that helps you wear those favorites more.
Boxy knits, crisp button-downs, and sharp tailoring are easy to wear on repeat. Depop’s 2026 forecast calls this idea “Modern Uniforms.” The forecast draws partly on what people search for and buy on Depop.
Build Around What You Already Wear
In 1985, Donna Karan built her first solo collection around “seven easy pieces”: knits you could mix and match for work, evenings, and weekends.
She started with a bodysuit, inspired by the leotards she wore at home. To go out, she’d add a skirt and scarf. She designed belts, bags, and jewelry to wear with her collection, too.
Her own outfit routine became the starting point—not a stranger’s essentials list. You can mix and match without counting the pieces in your closet. No ’80s bodysuit required.
If jeans and cardigans are what you happily reach for, those deserve more attention than a blazer you keep taking off. Think about which clothes you choose even when your other options are clean and ready to wear.

If you prefer dresses, your capsule doesn’t need several pairs of trousers just because an essentials list says so. Start with the clothes that suit your week, whether that means class, work, errands, or a little of everything.
Repeat a Shape, Not Every Detail
Miuccia Prada has a repeat outfit of her own: a long skirt with a button-down shirt or crewneck sweater. She switches up the colors and embellishments while sticking with a long skirt and a simple top.
Your version might be a fitted cardigan with wide-leg pants. If you prefer dresses, try a straight-cut knit dress with a jacket that hits at your hips. The pairing can stay familiar even when the individual pieces change.
What keeps you reaching for that outfit? Maybe it’s the straight-leg jeans, the fitted cardigan, or how loafers dress up a relaxed shirt.
If you like a sweater’s roomy fit, look for a similar shape next time instead of searching for any “fall basic.” Pay attention to where its hem lands, too. A cropped sweater and a long, slouchy knit can feel very different with the same jeans.
Switch Up the Colors and Textures
Chocolate-brown jeans, a chunky green sweater, and caramel suede loafers showed up together on Altuzarra’s fall 2026 runway. Think of it as a fresh version of sweater, jeans, shoes—not a whole new way to get dressed.
You can try that kind of update with an outfit you already like. Keep your favorite jeans and swap a smooth knit for a chunky one, or try brown denim with the sweater you usually wear over blue jeans.

Try changing the textures, too. A crisp shirt collar gives a soft cardigan a sharper edge. Layer a smooth leather or leather-look jacket over a slouchy sweater for a little structure.
A suede bag adds texture without adding a print. That gives you another way to change an outfit without changing its shape.
You could start with cream, navy, and brown—or use the colors you already love. A deep-red bag or cardigan can shift the mood of familiar jeans and knits. If you’d rather add pattern, try a striped sweater in the fit you keep reaching for.
Shop to Wear Your Favorites More
Before you shop secondhand, ask: “What would help me wear my favorites more?”
Maybe a thicker button-up cardigan would make your favorite shirt-and-jeans outfit work for cooler days. Maybe your knit dress needs a jacket you actually like wearing with it.
Try search terms like “dark-wash straight-leg jeans” or “button-up cardigan.” Then check the photos for details like ribbed hems and a jacket length that works with your favorite outfits.

Picture it beside clothes you own, not just beside other things you might buy.
