Clog Season: 3 Cozy Fall Outfits to Try
If paying $7 for coffee counts as going out then suede Birks, chunky socks, and oversized cardigans count as getting dressed.

Some fall outfits ask you to make plans. This one works with the plans you already have: coffee, a library stop, a grocery run that somehow becomes three errands. Think suede slip-ons, socks worth showing, and a cardigan with room to curl up in.
That’s the idea behind Clog Season: rounded clogs, plush-lined slip-ons, and relaxed layers. It’s a getting-dressed shortcut, not a whole new wardrobe assignment.
Start with the jeans or leggings already in rotation, then look secondhand for the textured layer you’re missing—if you’re missing anything at all. Here are three ways to wear the look with pieces you may already have.
Start With the Shoes
Start with a rounded clog, like a Birkenstock Boston, or a plush-lined slip-on in the UGG Tasman style. The Boston has an open back and buckle strap; the Tasman brings a slipper-inspired shape with braided trim. Both give you a recognizable starting point without needing much styling around them. You don’t need a particular label to try the look. Look for a rounded toe and an easy slip-on shape, then choose the details you like. An unlined clog works, too. You can skip the plush lining if you prefer.
For a soft-looking finish, try taupe or chestnut suede. If smooth leather feels more like you, build around that instead. Stay flat, or try a low platform if you want a little height.

Before choosing a pair, picture it with your usual bottoms. Would you reach for it with black leggings? Your favorite blue jeans? Start with that pairing rather than planning an entirely new outfit around the shoes.
Add a Chunky Knit or Plush Fleece
Chunky knits and soft suede give a simple outfit texture. Look for a slouchy cardigan with chunky ribbing, cables, or a brushed finish. Dropped shoulders and roomy sleeves are worth trying if you want space for a tee underneath.
Prefer a pullover? Try a roomy quarter-zip, half-zip, or snap-neck fleece with a plush finish. Leave the neckline slightly open over a crewneck tee, or zip it higher when you want to bundle up.
Start with neutrals, or add a bright fleece or patterned cardigan. Oatmeal, chocolate, gray, and black are easy starting points for these combinations, but there’s no need to replace a colorful layer you already love.
Then consider the socks. Try thick ribbed or cable-knit crews if you want that extra texture to show. Leave a little space between your denim hem and shoe, or gently scrunch the socks above a lined slip-on. A small peek is plenty.
Three Ways to Wear It
Clogs, Straight-Leg Jeans, and a Cardigan
Start with taupe clogs, chunky oatmeal socks, relaxed blue straight-leg jeans, and an oversized chocolate cardigan. Add a white tee, and you’ve got a complete outfit without negotiating with your closet for twenty minutes.
Try denim with a little room through the thigh and leg. If the hem covers the shoes more than you’d like, experiment with one small cuff. Prefer an uninterrupted line? Leave it down.
Wear the cardigan open to show the tee, or fasten a couple of buttons through the middle. A small front tuck is an option if you want the waistband visible; leaving the tee loose works, too.
Finish with the tote or everyday bag you already carry. Coffee can be the occasion, not a dress code.

Lined Slip-Ons, Leggings, and a Fleece
Pair chestnut lined slip-ons with matte black leggings and a roomy quarter-zip fleece. Add oatmeal or gray crew socks if you like a layered ankle detail.
Try a cream fleece for a quieter combination, or choose blue-and-green colorblocking for something brighter. The fleece and slip-ons bring plenty of texture, so a plain tee underneath is enough.
For the top, choose a length you enjoy wearing with leggings. That might mean a longer fleece with a loose hem or a boxier shape that lands near your hips. Neither needs to be the “right” proportion for anyone else.
Already have ribbed sweater-knit leggings? Try those for a more textured version. Otherwise, your familiar matte pair can stay exactly where it belongs: in regular rotation.
Clogs, Wide-Leg Denim, and a Patterned Knit
Try black clogs, wide-leg blue denim, and a substantial patterned cardigan. Stripes, Fair Isle, or a colorful knit can give this version a different feel without changing the basic formula.
For a starting point, picture a cream-and-red striped cardigan over a gray tee. Repeat the gray in your socks if you like a little coordination, or keep the socks hidden beneath the denim.
Try a hem that reveals the rounded toe without dragging under the heel. If wide-leg jeans aren’t your thing, softly curved or relaxed straight-leg denim offers another route.
Keep the cardigan loose for an all-over relaxed silhouette. Or try a shorter knit if you’d rather show more of the jeans. The point is to experiment with what feels good, not solve a proportions puzzle.

Find Your Version Secondhand
Before browsing, pull together one of these outfits from your closet. Seeing the pieces side by side can help you decide whether you want different shoes, a chunkier layer, or nothing extra.
If there’s a gap, try specific searches:
- “Suede buckle clog” or “lined slip-on”
- “Chunky cable cardigan” or “oversized ribbed cardigan”
- “Plush quarter-zip fleece” or “oversized snap fleece”
- “Relaxed straight-leg jeans” or “wide-leg denim”
Look closely at photos rather than relying on “cozy” in the description. For shoes, check the soles, heel edges, footbeds, and any lining. For knits and fleece, look at cuffs, underarms, closures, and close-ups of the texture. Ask for another photo if an important detail isn’t visible.
Compare clothing measurements with a piece you already enjoy wearing, especially the chest width, overall length, and denim inseam. For shoes, check the exact model and size markings rather than guessing from appearance.
You may already have most of this look. Keep those pieces in rotation, and let any secondhand addition join outfits you actually wear.
