Apple-Picking Outfits You’ll Wear Again

Cider in one hand, camera in the other: flannels, chunky cardigans, relaxed jeans, puddle-ready boots, and hands-free crossbodies.

Apple Picking

Getting dressed for a country weekend didn’t start with Instagram. Lady Levi’s jeans, introduced in 1934, were sold in New York for vacationers heading to Western dude ranches. For your orchard trip, think cozy layers that make the day feel a little different—and still work after the apple bag is empty.

More than a grocery run

People have been making a day out of picking fruit for more than a century. A 1907 ad pitched orange picking near Los Angeles as something new to try. By the 1920s, newspaper ads were inviting people to drive out of the city with friends and pick produce.

You’re buying an afternoon, not just something for the fruit bowl. At New York’s Harbes Orchard, the 2026 weekend and holiday apple-picking ticket costs $27. That includes a three-pound apple bag, a tractor-pulled wagon ride and live music.

Getting dressed can be part of the fun, too. You can look good in the photos and still be comfortable all afternoon. The clothes just need to work for more than the moment someone pulls out a camera.

Texture makes it feel like fall

A sweater could be a souvenir, too. By the 1930s, tourists could buy Aran knits in Dublin. Those cable knits gave visitors something cozy to bring home from a trip.

For an orchard day, cable knit, soft flannel and corduroy bring that cozy feeling without requiring a whole outfit of autumn colors.

Think about a smooth cardigan next to a chunky cable-knit one. Both give you an extra layer. The chunky cables make the second feel cozier, even over a plain tee.

A softly brushed flannel feels different from a crisp checked shirt, too. If you want that relaxed, outdoorsy feel, look for soft fabric—not just a plaid pattern.

You don’t have to stick with jeans. Try a corduroy skirt with tights, relaxed overalls or a casual knit dress. Choose the shape you actually enjoy wearing.

And if rust and chocolate aren’t your colors, skip them. Try a navy knit, an apple-red flannel or cream corduroy. The outfit doesn’t have to match the leaves to feel right for the day.

Layers and boots for the actual orchard

The strongest orchard outfit isn’t one you have to protect from the orchard.

Try a waffle-knit henley under a chunky cardigan with relaxed jeans and boots with grippy soles. It’s a complete outfit built from pieces that can go their separate ways afterward.

If the afternoon warms up, take off the cardigan. The henley still looks good on its own. A flannel worn open over your base layer gives you the same flexibility if you’d rather skip the sweater.

Boots can look rugged without being made for muddy paths. Try a flat or low, broad heel with a grippy sole. If the paths might be wet, check whether the boots are waterproof, too.

On L.L.Bean’s women’s eight-inch insulated Bean Boot, the waterproofing stops just below the stitching on the rubber shell. The leather above it isn’t covered by that claim. Check the details for the particular pair you’re considering rather than judging by the shape alone.

A crossbody leaves your hands free for the apple bag. Corduroy or canvas fits right in with the cozy layers, but the bag you already love works, too.

If you want to toss your layers in the wash afterward, check the care labels first. Rugged-looking doesn’t always mean machine-washable: Barbour’s waxed jackets need hand cleaning, not a trip through the washing machine.

Give the outfit another weekend

Look for pieces you’ll want to wear after the trip, too. Picture the cardigan over a tee on an ordinary Tuesday, or the flannel with your favorite jeans next weekend. The orchard can be one occasion for the outfit, not its only occasion.

Shopping secondhand? Try searches like “waffle-knit henley,” “brushed flannel,” “cable-knit cardigan” or “corduroy.” Those details get you closer to the cozy fabrics you’re picturing than “fall” alone.

Start with what’s missing from your closet rather than replacing the whole outfit.

If you’re missing a layer, browse Curtsy for a cardigan or flannel you’ll keep reaching for after the weekend.
