A Letter to Incoming Freshman 💌…

Freshmen,

It’s September 1st 2018, two full weeks into my freshman year at The Ohio State University and…. I want to transfer.

The day I received my acceptance letter into my dream college, I jumped out of bed screaming and jumping up and down like the main character of one of those predictable teen movies. Never did I ever think I would be sitting here on the phone with my mom asking her if it was possible to call Arizona State back telling them, I changed my mind and I’d like to move in ASAP.

“Give it a semester,” my mom would argue.

I didn’t want to hear that. I didn’t like my college. I didn’t get along with my roommates, my only friends were the quad of boys at the end of my hall, I was too anxious to eat, I missed my friends, I was already failing math, and above all else – I wanted to go home.

It’s now August 17th 2021, exactly one week away from starting my senior year at The Ohio State University and…. I don’t want to graduate.

As shocking as it may be, your mom does know a thing or two.

I could sit here and preach to you about “making friends on your floor” or “joining some clubs on campus” but I’m sure your university’s orientation leader has already done that.

The truth is, college is just another part of your life, and in life, things don’t always go as planned. You may not be best friends with your roommate, you may not know how to navigate your way home your first night out, you might fail your first math course, or you could be sitting in your dorm asking yourself if you made the right college decision. And you know what? It happens.

And you know what else? You are going to be just fine.

Because, let me give you the tea ☕️. If I packed it all up and booked a one-way ticket home, I wouldn’t have met my five best friends and current roommates. I wouldn’t have realized I didn’t want to be a lawyer, I wanted to run public relations at a fashion company. I wouldn’t have met my soulmate. I wouldn’t have gotten the offer for Campus Representative for Victoria’s Secret PINK. I wouldn’t have met my giant group of guy friends at my sorority’s paired block event. I wouldn’t have spent countless Tuesday nights at my favorite bar with all my friends. I wouldn’t have realized that walk home was actually just a straight shot. I wouldn’t have raised that first semester GPA from a 2.7 to a 3.8.

I wouldn’t be sitting here, at my year-long internship, located in a 21-floor high rise building, in my own personal cubicle, writing this letter to all of you.

So, before you pack your bags and make that call to your mom, before you think you’re the only one who can’t quite seem to figure this whole college thing out – give it time.

For some, college is everything and more from the time they first step onto that huge campus. For others (like me), college babe, we are gonna need a little work.

Your college experience is your own mini personal journey. It’s that time period in your life where you have responsibilities, but not “mortgage payment responsibilities.” Soak up the freedom, test your adulting skills, take some risks, and most importantly enjoy the ride (maybe buckle up if your roommate decides she likes to sing opera songs in the shower).

One day you’ll wake up and wonder where all the time went but – smile knowing all that time was put to good use shaping the person you have become.

Thrifting & Other Sustainability Tips from Club Curtsy💚

It’s obvious here at Curtsy we support a circular economy and believe thrifting is a major player in shopping and selling sustainably. But how can you help out our earth in other aspects of your life? 🌎 We’ve got you!

Meet a few ✨awesome Stylists✨ from Club Curtsy’s Summer 2021 class below. 👇

Pro tip:We’re always sharing sustainability tips on our Instagram & TikTok. ♻️

🪴 Why I Love Thrifting: I love thrifting and shopping second hand because it’s better for the environment and cheaper as well! Additionally, with things like denim more wear is good because they’re more comfortable!
♻️ Sustainability Tip:
My favorite sustainability tip is to find clothing brands that align with your own values and goals (such as sustainable brands etc). I also like to reuse packaging like jars!

Madison Crain

🪴 Why I Love Thrifting:
I love shopping with curtsy and thrift stores in general because not only are the clothes cheaper, it is helping the environment! Not to mention, it is super easy to post the clothes you don’t want anymore on curtsy!
♻️ Sustainability Tip:
One of my sustainability tips is to try to use reusable bags when going to the store, wether that be the grocery store or shopping out and about! You can also use metal straws instead of plastic straws so you aren’t wasting any plastic, you can even buy the reusable Starbucks cups!

🪴 Why I Love Thrifting: I love thrifting because I get to rehome my clothes to someone who will appreciate them more than me.
♻️ Sustainability Tip:
If I have one tip on staying sustainable its that anything that may seem old to you can be new to someone else!

🪴 Why I Love Thrifting:
I’ve recently found a love for fashion- especially second hand. Thrifting/second hand shopping is such a great way to avoid buying fast fashion, which is unfortunately mistreating us, as well as our environment. Older pieces that I find to be my style are marked down significantly, so it’s easy to have a wardrobe full of what I WANT to wear! Thrifting is one of my favorite activities to do with my friends. Trying out new styles without breaking the bank is truly a fun and rewarding experience!
♻️ Sustainability Tip:
My favorite sustainability tip is to purchase one or two reusable water bottles. I have two bottles that I switch between, and they’re great! Americans throw away 35 billion empty water bottles a year- and only 12% are recycled. Having a reusable bottle eliminates the waste, and I’ve also found that I’m excited to use it!

How to Have a Hot Girl Summer ❤️‍🔥

By this point, we ALL have heard about having a Hot Girl Summer, ever since Megan the Stallion told us to live ours back in 2019. Having a Hot Girl Summer means so many things to different people, but at Curtsy we feel that living your best, Hot Girl Summer life, starts with loving yourself and living by the mantra that “every body is a bikini body!” So here’s some ways that you can live your best life in Summer 2021!

Loving Yourself Starts from Within 🕊

This Summer is all about finding out what makes YOU happy! That includes what you physically put into your body and how you treat yourself from the inside out. Give yourself a break and eat food that makes you feel good or refreshed and energized! Start journaling your feelings and thoughts to get them out of your head and into the universe.

It is so good to release negativity and feel inner peace so that your mental, emotional and physical health can flourish! Drink your water, do your skincare routine and give yourself compliments because you gotta love yourself before anyone else can!

Find YOUR People 👯‍♀️

One of the best parts of the Summer is that we have time off to enjoy the simpler things in life, more sunlight into the evening and a chance to spend time with the ones who bring us joy! Whether it’s a significant other, your best friends or your family, take time to really do something with them! Go on a road trip to somewhere new, explore a new city or spend some downtime at the beach or pool making memories that will last a lifetime. You have all the time in the day to make the most of it so why not do it with the people that you love?!

Wear What Makes YOU Happy ❤️

During the Summer, the fashion of the season can be SO FUN, so why not use it to express yourself! Whether you try out a new aesthetic like the Coconut Girl or you still to your go-to summer faves, have fun with style! Always remember that you look beautiful when you feel beautiful so figure out what summer dresses, denim shorts, and swimsuits make you feel the most confident and strut your stuff all Summer long! If you have yet to find what pieces you really love, don’t forget to check out Curtsy to find your seasonal wardrobe!

💖 What I love about Curtsy: I can always find trendy clothing that I actually *want* 😍 It takes so much time and effort to find pieces I like on other resale clothing apps, but Curtsy makes it super quick and easy to find all kinds of stylish clothes. I could spend hours looking at cute clothes on the popular page!
🔥 Pro tips: Don’t be afraid to style the clothes you’re selling into actual outfits! I’ve found that they sell best when you can really visualize how each piece could be worn 💃🏻
PS: My favorite brand to shop on Curtsy is Zara. There’s always an amazing selection (and sometimes even sold out items)!

5 Easy Ways to Reduce Your Environmental Impact ♻️

Meet our Curtsy Stylists: Rachel, Ally, Grace, & Aaliyah
Meet our Curtsy Stylists: Rachel, Ally, Grace, & Aaliyah

Need some inspo on how to help reduce your carbon footprint and environmental impact? Read on!

  1. Shop & sell responsibly
    • 🛍️ Buy from:
      • Curtsy, duh — but really, the best way to keep up with fashion trends sustainably is to buy secondhand.
      • Facebook Marketplace — there are some GREAT finds out there for furniture. West Elm, Pottery Barn, vintage. Fun fact: our office furniture is all thrifted off of FB Marketplace thanks to our very own Clags!
      • Remake — a Curtsy partner, Remake has a brand directory where they rate brands you already know & love based on factors including: Human Rights, Climate, Water, and Waste. Discover new brands on there & shop them on Curtsy
    • ♻️ Give items a second, third, fourth, etc. life
      • Don’t waste any of your precious time in person at the thrift store. And do you really know where items you donate end up in? The majority end up in landfills. Instead, sell your items on a resale platform like Curtsy so you know they’re not going to end up in a landfill after you’re done with them.
  2. Rethink your beauty & kitchen tools
    • 💋 Beauty — Replace your disposable cotton swabs & pads with something reusable! I personally used to use those disposable make up wipes everyday but have since replaced them with reusable pads & a MakeUp Eraser
    • 🧋 Eat/drink — Try replacing your sandwich bags & saran wrap with beeswax wraps & silicone sandwich bags.Do you still drink your coffee & tea out of paper cups? Do you still buy plastic water bottles? Try reusable tumblers and mugs like these instead. There are SO many options out there.
  3. Watch these documentaries
    • 👗 The True Cost — an eyeopening deep dive into the fast fashion industry
    • 🌊 Seaspiracy — how our diets affect our ocean friends
  4. 🌎 David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet — our impact on nature

  5. Commute consciously — now there are plenty of ways to get around: carpool with friends, bike, scooter/moped, take public transportation, or get some fresh air and walk. 🚲🛴🛵

  6. Follow these sustainable influencers for more inspo:
